My Water Spinach Burned
I have already for waiting the growth of the water spinach I planted two weeks ago. They're now in Styrofoam boxes, waiting another week for harvest, but something unexpected has happened.
What happened?
I felt like about to give up. I've planted two batches of water spinach, and the failures kept coming. It wasn't that they weren't growing well, but rather that they weren't perfect, up to my standards. As a farmer who supplies several supermarkets, this is a significant obstacle right now, and losses are also my biggest fear.
The water spinach isn't growing uniformly; the size differences are very obvious. Even the outer leave are turn yellow and look burnt. I've checked the pH, ppm, and water content several times, but the results are still the same.
What's the cause?
I'm still investigating, but I know why. I'll list the products I use for my water spinach. Usually, the two most important things are seeds and fertilizer.
I used these seeds. The 1 kg seed size is the cheapest. This seeds are not only affordable but also of good quality. I've been using these seeds for two years, with only a few failures, including the batches in June and July 2025. There shouldn't be any problems.
Second, I usually use AB Mix fertilizer. I've never had any problems using it. I've been using AB Mix for almost seven years. I changed it when I first started hydroponically farming, but this fertilizer is the only one best suited to the water quality in this area.
So, what's the main cause of my water spinach turning yellow?
The reason is the weather. You know, this summer has been absolutely terrible. The air is very dry because the sun's rays reach the ground. I checked the air temperature for the past week and it's been around 36-37 degrees Celsius. This is very likely to burn the water spinach, even though I water it frequently.

There are many things I like, especially hydroponics and coffee, sometimes I also like traveling and eating whatever I want. Life should be like that, there must be many things you like so you can live well. Of course, what you want is a dream, so, when you have a dream then what you have to do is to achieve that dream, don't just let it be a dream.

I love water spinach. I think the weather really is a big factor why the leaves turned yellow. I also have my small garden of vegetables. I have pechay, (I don't know what it is called in your country). So I planted it in a recycled water bottle. It was just doing fine not until the weather became really humid, and the leaves turned yellow. Even if I water it in the morning it's still the same. So I thought I'll just harvest them early. It's just for personal consumption anyway. But yours is commercial so I hope they recover fast. Will wait for your update of your waterspinach!
The weather here is so hot, it's almost ruined some of our other vegetables. So, we decided to take a summer break, LOL.
Sad to hear about what happened to your water spinach. I hope they still manage to survive if not fully recover. Indeed, planting is a roller coaster too, sometimes up, sometimes down. We just need to be patient, and determined to try again. The best thing is that we always learn in every difficult and negative experience.
Plants are also living creatures, there are always problems in living peacefully :D
