A little Green Corner - Balcony full of Succulents

(edited)

Hello, everyone! Let me introduce myself first, cause I think this is my very first post in this community. My name is Bojana and today I'd love to share some beautiful succulents and a few other flowers growing on my aunt's balcony.

A few days ago, we went to her place. She lives in a town about a 40-minute drive from us, and we had a wonderful reason to celebrate: my brother, her son, had just graduated with his bachelor's degree! My uncle was more than happy to have us all over for some delicious food, good company, and awesome atmosphere.

Anyway, my aunt has always loved taking care of her garden and terraces. She's a big fan of ornamental greenery and has a real talent for combining different plants into beautiful, harmonious arrangements. Her balconies have always been packed with all sorts of interesting flowering plants, but over the past few years, succulents have definitely taken center stage.

She'll buy a tiny plant somewhere, then propagate it and use the new little plants to fill all kinds of uniquely shaped pots. And guess what? She's made most of those pots herself! She's a truly creative soul. Although she's a computer science teacher by profession, gardening and designing outdoor spaces seem to go hand in hand with another one of her talents: designing, cutting, and sewing clothes.

Honestly, I can safely say that she seems to have a knack for just about anything she decides to try and dedicate herself to.

And these succulents are no exception, don't you agree?
One year, she gave me one as a gift and of course, I somehow managed to destroy them. I guess I was watering them too much, because succulents definitely aren't fans of water.

I honestly don't know much about succulents that I could tell you, other than the fact that they're beautiful, I love them, and I tend to prefer the ones with smaller, silvery-grey leaves.

I did a bit of Googling just now and came across all sorts of names, such as Echeveria elegans, Sedum clavatum, Aeonium... But I'd be lying if I told you I could tell which one is which, hihi. :D

All I really know is how much I enjoy their beauty whenever we sit out on the terrace to have a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. I love them so much that I end up taking photos of them from pretty much every angle imaginable, every single time!

And the pots themselves are just as fascinating. My aunt made them using plaster and soaked cardboard, then painted each one by hand. Such a lovely way to combine her love of plants with her creativity!

Oh, but wait, I DO recognize one plant after all > the Chinese money plant, with those interesting, round leaves! Or is it Chinese, or have I got the nationality wrong too? I just know it's some kind of dollar plant. At least I am sure I got the currency part right, hihi. :D

Are there any plants you love but just can't take care of properly, no matter how hard you try? What's that one plant that always ends up dying on you, even when you follow all the care instructions to a T?

My aunt insists that succulents are really easy to care for and that there's not much you can do wrong. And yet, somehow, I managed to mess even that up! We have a saying here that goes something like: "I'd lose a sheep drawn on a piece of paper if someone left it in my care!" and that's so meee. :D

Thank you all for reading! Wishing you a lovely day, everyone! <3

My sister grows a lot of succulent as well, she says they're pretty easy to grow. But I haven't seen this one at hers, it's nice

Do you mean your cousin, and not your brother?

Hihi, well, yes, but in Serbia, we also call our aunts’ and uncles’ children brothers and sisters. We even have specific terms for aunts and uncles depending on which side of the family they’re from. Your mother’s sister is your tetka (maternal aunts), your father’s sister is also tetka (paternal aunts), your mother’s brother is your ujak (maternal uncle) and your father’s brother is your stric (paternal uncle).

The terms for their partners change accordingly, too (teča, ujna, strina). And their children are our brothers and sisters. 😁

This probably sounded like an unsolvable math equation, sorry. 🤣

I see, that makes perfect sense. We also call our cousins from our dad's brothers as brother and sisters because we all have the same surname. And likewise, we have 7 different names for the 8 aunties depending on the relationship to us. Only the wives of our mother's brothers are called the same. We call all other aunties different names depending on whether they're younger or older than our mum or dad, and whether they're a sibling or married to a sibling.

So yours is not too complex, don't worry😄. It may sound so for other westerners where aunty and uncle is a catch all name for everyone. But I think our and your system is much clearer, and we know immediately how people are related.

Let's go and confuse them all now 🤣

The colours and shapes of succulents are so fun to work with, and they don't need as much care as other plants - so they get a big YES! from me! Love your aunts handiwork!

It looks like each pot was designed to go with the other plants that share the space. Awesome job.
