Stickyweed and Hay Fever

Stickyweed and Hay Fever.jpg

With all the recent alternating rain and sun there has been quite a lot of growth in our garden... and unfortunately, not all of it is welcome! The current critical project is the removal of every instance of this stupid stickyweed. It grows fast, seems to prefer the humid and damp soil areas that are shaded, and as its name implies.... sticks to everything with little hooks in its leaves.

The root structure is also pretty thin and easily breaks, and so it you have to be pretty through and careful when uprooting it to make sure that you are definitely getting everything... otherwise you are going to be doing the same task a few more times.

Thankfully, the other invasive pest plants like the passionfruit seem to be held at bay at the moment... so, I can devote one morning a week to this stickyweed search and destroy missions!

... and for some reason, this year, the symptoms of hay fever are starting to hit myself and the little one. Not sure if the grass pollen count is higher... or if it is just a side-effect of having my face down in the grass whilst dealing with weeds and other unwanted growths... and the grass in the wrong spots!

My brother and mother suffer really badly from hay fever... myself, almost nothing until this year. The little one has been helping me out a bit in the garden, and she has a bit of a scratchy throat, headache, and runny nose... so, I finally succumbed and bought some hayfever medicine. A little tablet before going out in the garden. Seems to work!

Annoying... but I would rather do this instead of getting slightly funny feeling in the afternoon.

Good luck with your war on weeds. I would say that it seems to be an unending labor in my garden when weeds come out. They are really stubborn and spread really fast, even faster than the important plants, lol 😆 Patience and hard work are needed to naturally get rid of them. 😅

Yep... why do they grow so much faster?!?!?!?

I think I already saw these plants before. I never knew it had medicinal power. Thanks for sharing.

They don't! The tablets have medicinal power!

We get some stickyweed here and it can be annoying. It's amazing how fast some weeds can grow, but we try to avoid using chemicals in the garden. Just keep pulling them up. Some are good for wildlife, so we may leave them a patch.

My hayfever has been kicking in a bit lately.

Oh, also in the UK? I'm trying to avoid chemicals... we have in the past when the grass got more than we could handle... but in the end, it doesn't seem to really do much other than wipe out the above ground growth which soon regenerates.

I'd get rid of the stickyweed, but eat the passionfruit! Yum! 😋

Passionfruit vines choke everything...

I'm glad you found a way to manage it and even take care of hay fever at the same time. Hope your garden stays clear and your little one feels better soon.

Fingers crossed... but I suspect I'll be doing it quite a bit more often!
