New plants and Prepping Ground

New plants and Prepping Ground.jpg

We have been humming and hawing about what sort of ground cover to put down in this large backyard space... and now that the huge sheoak has been taken down, we probably should do something about it in this autumn/winter period before the summer has all the weeds and unwanted grass sprout up everywhere... plus, the unintended side effect of huge logs falling from a great height means that the ground is a little bit softer... and the dragging over the ground also killed off some of the weeds and grass! Not lots, but enough to make it look more barren and manageable!

... so, a start with the weeding... but the ground was that hard clay stuff... pretty hard to dig into, and the weeds would snap and leave too much of a root structure.

But then we got rain, and the clay softens up heaps! A layer of Gypsum to break it up... and we are planning to roll out some San Anna cooch grass that will be nicer than the scraggly stuff that we get... I want to do this in stages, as I know full well that if we do it in one big go... well, it just won't get done.

... and post grass shopping/scouting trip... we dropped by a nursery to pick up some extra plants for around the house. Some kangaroo paws for the inner beds... in yellow and red, and a larger.... thing.. a bush with really nice blooms. Our neighbour has one, they bush up nice and big have have these lovely bulb shaped flowers, and as a plus, it is also native to Australia!

And finally, in the newly walled area... some blueberries and camellias. A mix of edible and bloomable! We will likely edge it with Azaleas I think, but my wife wanted to just do the bigger stuff first, so that we would have a better idea of what to do with the space that was left.

That ground did look a bit rough! I know clay is a pain to work with when it comes to gardens. Great for sculpting though!

Yeah, clay and rocks... not a fun combo to dig into!

I have never seen that plant. It seems like there aren't any in my country or I never knew.
