Making A Bamboo Raised Bed

IMG_4002.jpeg
Having so much bamboo in my garden got me thinking. Yep, I got a lot of bamboo slats from a former shack that was demolished last year by housing workers.

IMG_4005.jpeg

I got a lot of bamboo slats, and they've been very useful. I usually use the bamboo slats for plant supports, and more importantly, I also use them to cover the growing medium in the raised bed from cats that defecate in the raised bed.

The two raised beds I made from white brick were already filled with plants. So I decided to make a new raised bed from these bamboo slats.

First, I had to create a square pattern in the ground. I would build the bamboo raised bed at the end of the plot next to the irrigation system. After creating the pattern, I then dug the ground so that the bamboo slats would be easier to insert into the ground.

IMG_4006.jpeg
Because this land was a former dump of house construction materials, the ground contained a lot of brick fragments. I had to dig slowly.

I felt the ground was soft enough after digging. I started to hammer the bamboo slats into the soil.

IMG_4007.jpeg
I used an iron hoe to pound the bamboo slats, which helped them become firmly embedded.

Finally, a raised bed was formed from the bamboo slats. It looked pretty neat. 😻❤️😍

I finished the raised bed. Then I filled it with organic material in preparation for planting.

IMG_4011.jpeg
First, at the base, I filled the raised bed with used cardboard boxes. I got a lot of used cardboard boxes from online purchases. So, it was very useful; nothing went to waste.

IMG_4012.jpeg
IMG_4013.jpeg

After adding used cardboard to the bottom layer of the raised bed, I added an important component for the fertility of the growing medium. I added chopped banana stems, which I had prepared earlier.

IMG_4014.jpeg

I filled the bamboo raised bed almost to the top with the chopped banana stems. This was no problem, as they would shrink quickly.

IMG_4015.jpeg

After I finished chopping the banana stems, I continued to add grass to the chopped stems.

IMG_4016.jpeg
IMG_4017.jpeg
Then, I added the kitchen waste compost I made in an old gallon jug. It doesn't matter if the compost isn't fully composted yet, as it's still kitchen waste, because it will decompose in the raised bed.

IMG_4018.jpeg
The final layer of fertile organic growing media in the raised bed is a mixture of soil, burnt rice husks, and goat manure.

IMG_4019.jpeg

Done, yay! Happy, happy, happy! 🌸🌸🌸 The clear sky is already very hot. But the view is beautiful with the super blue sky and beautiful flowers. Photos that don't need editing.

IMG_4001.jpeg

This raised bed can be planted directly with easy-to-grow plants like water spinach and spinach. But don't immediately plant plants with sensitive roots like chilies and tomatoes in the raised bed. Wait at least a month.

Meanwhile, I plan to plant ginger in the raised bed in a few weeks. I'm currently preparing the ginger seedlings for transplanting.

So, I hope you're also excited about the new season in the garden. Until next time!

I noticed you didn't tie the slats together, did you have to pound them in very deep?

I have considered growing ginger because it's quite expensive here, but when I see the YT videos, what people harvest after many months doesn't seem to be a lot more than what they planted in,so it doesn't seem to be worth it. Not sure if I'm missing something

Yes, I did it. Also because the ground also have many small rocks so it will be great to hold the all bamboo together.

We can harvest them at least 6 month for general ginger. For red type, up to 1 years. Yeah the price also expensive here and I often make ginger tea so I think it will be great to plant them.

Well, still worth it if we have more spaces. Thats why I will plant them in the back. Ginger similar with turmeric, no need more care like green veggies. No need pesticide.

I'm giving it a go when spring rolls around again. If you do it first I can learn from you...😀

I love how creative you are when it comes to your garden. The result is just amazing and with how good you made it, it look so neat and organized, really fits to the whole place. Now, if you could do more like forming a line or putting them somewhere, it will surely look livelier especially once the plants you want ro plan there started growing 💃🌟✨

The final product looked nice considering you used material you already had. What a creative idea to use the bamboo. I was wondering why place cardboard at the bottom on the bed? Doesn't the water need to soak to the ground? Won't the soil become mildew?

Thanks for sharing all the items you placed in the bed. Do you find instructions on what to place in a raised garden bed?

Take care.

I like how you always try to recycle old things, that's so environmental friendly. Your bamboo raised bed looks beautiful and I am looking forward to see how well the ginger will grow there! 😊

Qué gran proyecto Anggrek. Me encanta cómo usas el bambú y materiales reciclados como el cartón y los tallos de banano para crear suelo fértil. Ese cantero se ve genial y muy ecológico.
