Transplanting family asparagus and strawberries / 家族の思い出のアスパラガスといちごを庭へ

I transplanted the asparagus that I had been growing in a pot on the balcony for almost three years into the garden. I had already felt that the pot might be too small, but the roots were even more developed than I expected. I’m really glad I decided to move it.

This asparagus has a special story for me. Three years ago, when my daughter was hospitalized with pneumonia, I used to go to a nearby organic store to buy snacks and meals during the stay. One day, I found this asparagus placed next to the cashier. I ended up buying a pot, and we all made it safely back home together. At that time, I didn’t have a garden yet, so I placed the largest pot on the balcony in the best spot and started growing it there.

Earlier that same year, before my daughter was hospitalized, my mother had passed away in spring. Every time we returned to Japan, she would buy strawberries for us. I planted strawberries at the edge of the asparagus pot as well. So this pot holds many memories for me.

And after three years… the roots had completely filled the large pot. I’m really glad I dug it up and checked. I posted a video on Instagram — I hope it embeds properly here.

This morning, I found a shared car nearby, so I went to the garden and planted the asparagus together with the strawberries that had been growing alongside it.

As often happens with gardening, I completely forgot to take a photo of the asparagus and strawberry 😅 At least I took a photo of the garden. It looks the same as usual.

The apple tree that our friends helped prune the other day has started to sprout new buds. I hope it feels refreshed and happy 😊

The 2026 gardening season is beginning. I’m really looking forward to seeing what kind of season it will be this year!

長らくバルコニーで鉢で育てていたアスパラガスを庭に移植しました。鉢じゃきついだろうなあと思っていたら、思っていた以上に根が張っていて、移植してよかったです。

このアスパラガスは、子供が肺炎になって入院していた3年前に、付き添い入院の合間におやつや食事を買いに行っていたオーガニックストアのレジの横に並んでいました。思わず一鉢買って、みんなで一緒に無事家に帰ってきたのでした。当時はまだ庭を借りていなくて、バルコニーの一番大きな鉢を一等地に置いて育て始めました。

子供が入院する前、同じ年の春に母が亡くなって、日本に帰国するたびに用意して待ってくれていたいちごをアスパラの鉢の端にも植えました。というわけで、私にとっては思い出深い一鉢。

それから3年間・・・・・・・大鉢にびっしり根を張っていました。掘ってみてよかったです。インスタにアップした動画、うまくはれるかな？

今朝、近所にシェアカーの車があったので、アスパラと、寂しくないように一緒に植えていたいちごを庭に植えてきました。庭作業あるあるで、写真を撮るのを忘れてしまいました 😅 庭は相変わらず。

先日友人一家に剪定を手伝ってもらったりんごの木からは新芽が出ていました。すっきりして喜んでいるといいな。

2026年のガーデニングシーズンが始まりますね。今年はどんなシーズンになるだろう。とても楽しみです。
