Things I Noticed About Rhubarb in the Garden / 庭でルバーブについて気づいたこと

Since last year, the garden I rent has had about three rhubarb plants growing in it.

Rhubarb is one of the plants I came to love after moving to Germany. It started when an elderly gardener, a friend of my partner’s grandmother, gave me homemade rhubarb jam. It was so tasty! Botanically it is a vegetable, but it is usually used like a fruit.

Recently I realized, “Ah, I messed up!” because I forgot to blanch the rhubarb. Blanching is a method where you cover the plant with something like a bucket to block the light, which helps grow long, soft red stalks. But well, it is still edible, so that is fine too.

I also noticed something else in the garden. I had been thinking I would wait until the strawberries were ready so I could harvest them together with the rhubarb and make jam or cake. But then I realized — I could just harvest the rhubarb first and freeze it! The rhubarb had recently grown quite large and started creating a lot of shade around it, which I had been a little concern about, you know, ... slugs! So I harvested some, cut it into small pieces, and froze it.

This year, the strawberries on the balcony have far more flowers than usual, and some plants have already started forming fruit. The strawberries I transplanted into the garden are also growing almost too well.

I am already looking forward to making strawberry and rhubarb jam and cakes 😊

去年から借りている庭には、ルバーブが3株ほど植っています。ルバーブはドイツに来てから好きになった植物のひとつで、パートナーのおばあちゃんの友人で、ガーデニング好きのおじいちゃんから手作りのルバーブジャムをもらったのがきっかけでした。分類的には野菜ですが、果物みたいに使われます。

ブランチングをし忘れて、最近「ああ、やっちまった！」と思いました。ブランチングは、バケツなどを被せて光を遮ることで、赤くて長い柔らかい茎を育てる方法です。まあでも食べられるしよし。

それから、庭でひとつ気づいたことがありました。いちごができるまでルバーブには待ってもらって、一緒に収穫してジャムやケーキにしようと思っていたのですが、ルバーブを先に収穫して、冷凍しておけばいいんだ！と。最近ルバーブがかなり大きくなってきて、周りに影を作り始めていたのが気になっていたのです。ということで少し収穫してきて、小さく切って冷凍しました。

今年はバルコニーのいちごが例年になくたくさん花をつけていて、すでに実ができ始めている株もあります。庭に移植したいちごたちも元気すぎるくらい元気です。

今からいちごとルバーブのジャムやケーキを作るのが楽しみです 😊
