Hoy nos vamos de viaje a Einsiedeln, el pueblo que me voy nacer y al que no he visitado tantas veces como me hubiera gustado. Un pequeño pueblo localizado en la Suiza “alemana” no parece un lugar muy exótico, desde luego no tanto como las pirámides de Egipto.

Pero si te ofrezco un viaje la pasado quizás si me quieras acompañar. Esta población es y fue un gran lugar de peregrinaje mariana. Lo que nos remite a una historia cargada de leyenda y sucesos prodigiosos.

No acaba aquí la historia de Einsiedeln, ya que uno de sus hijos fue el gran médico y alquimista Paracelso. Por lo que hoy te invito a que me acompañes en mi máquina del tiempo a presenciar algunos de los hechos históricos en los que no estuve, pero me hubiera gustado estar.

Einsiedeln es un pequeño pueblo con unos 15.000 habitantes. Situado en el cantón de Schwyz, el más antiguo de Suiza, es un lugar de peregrinación y punto de paso del Camino de Santiago.

Uno de los reclamos en la gran abadía benedictina, una enorme construcción de estilo barroco, y su virgen negra… y aquí comenzamos con la historia.

Today we’re taking a trip to Einsiedeln, the town where I was born and which I haven’t visited as often as I would have liked. A small town located in “German” Switzerland doesn’t seem like a very exotic place—certainly not as much as the pyramids of Egypt.

But if I offer you a trip back in time, perhaps you’ll want to join me. This town is—and has always been—a major Marian pilgrimage site. This takes us back to a history steeped in legend and miraculous events.

The story of Einsiedeln doesn’t end there, as one of its sons was the great physician and alchemist Paracelsus. So today, I invite you to join me in my time machine to witness some of the historical events I wasn’t there for—but wish I had been.

Einsiedeln is a small town with about 15,000 residents. Located in the canton of Schwyz—the oldest in Switzerland—it is a place of pilgrimage and a stop along the Camino de Santiago.

One of the main attractions is the grand Benedictine abbey, a massive Baroque-style building, and its Black Madonna… and this is where our story begins.

Un dato curioso es el siguiente, el pueblo nace alrededor de la abadía. Primero se establecieron los monjes y, con el paso del tiempo, fue creciendo a su alrededor la población que hoy conocemos.

Otro apunte interesante es el origen del nombre de Einsiedeln, que proviene de la palabra alemana Einsiedler, que significa «ermitaño».

Sobre el año mil un monje llamado Meinrad abandonó el monasterio en el que vivía, cerca del lago Constanza, buscando una vida más sencilla y la soledad.

Primero buscó la tranquilidad en la montaña y como los lugareños no le dejaban tranquilo, dice la historia que no paraban de pedirle consejos, Meinrad dejó el monte y se internó en lo profundo de un bosque. Entre los árboles encontró una fuente y junto a esta fuente construyó una ermita dedicada a la Virgen María. Una pequeña capilla que albergaba la imagen de la Virgen que había recibido de la abadesa Hildegarda de Zurich.

Aunque tampoco es esta ocasión alcanzó la paz y tranquilidad, que seguro que buscaba Meinrad, se asentó en ese lugar de forma definitiva. La ermita se convirtió en lugar de peregrinaje.

Here’s an interesting fact: the town grew up around the abbey. The monks settled there first, and over time, the town we know today developed around them.

Another interesting point is the origin of the name Einsiedeln, which comes from the German word Einsiedler, meaning “hermit.”

Around the year 1000, a monk named Meinrad left the monastery where he lived, near Lake Constance, in search of a simpler life and solitude.

He first sought peace in the mountains, but since the locals wouldn’t leave him alone—the story goes that they kept asking him for advice—Meinrad left the mountains and ventured deep into a forest. Among the trees, he found a spring, and next to it he built a hermitage dedicated to the Virgin Mary—a small chapel that housed the image of the Virgin he had received from Abbess Hildegard of Zurich.

Although he did not find the peace and tranquility he was surely seeking on this occasion either, Meinrad settled there permanently. The hermitage became a place of pilgrimage.

Todos los bienes que iba recibiendo nuestro ermitaño de los peregrinos los entregaba a los más necesitados. Sin embargo, había quienes creían que con los regalos de los devotos se estaba convirtiendo en un hombre rico.

Este fue el caso de dos ladrones que con la intención de robarle, asesinaron a Meinrad una gélida mañana de enero de 861.

La leyenda cuenta como dos cuervos que vivían junto a nuestro eremita, persiguieron a los dos ladrones durante kilómetros y que gracias a sus graznidos y ataques las autoridades pudieron identificar a los asesinos. Los dos cuervos de esta leyenda son los que aparecen representados en el escudo de armas de Einsiedeln.

En el año 934, un monje llamado Eberhard fundó un monasterio sobre el lugar en el que se hallaba la ermita en la que los peregrinos veneraban a la Virgen. El emplazamiento del monasterio recibió el nombre de Einsiedeln, que como ya escribí anteriormente, significa en alemán: “lugar de los ermitaños”

Continuamos con las leyendas. Cuando la primera iglesia del monasterio estuvo terminada y todo estaba preparado para su consagración ocurrió algo inesperado. El encargado de celebrar la ceremonia, el obispo de Constanza, tuvo una visión, una voz le dijo que no era necesario consagrar la iglesia porque Cristo ya lo había hecho, acompañado por ángeles y santos.

Al día siguiente, un 14 se septiembre del año 948. cuando iba a comenzar la ceremonia, de nuevo el obispo recibió el mismo mensaje:la iglesia ya estaba consagrada por Cristo. Por lo que decidió, ante un acontecimiento tan extraordinario suspender la consagración.

Our hermit gave away all the gifts he received from pilgrims to those most in need. However, there were those who believed that, thanks to the gifts from the devout, he was becoming a wealthy man.

This was the case with two thieves who, intending to rob him, murdered Meinrad on a freezing January morning in 861.

Legend has it that two ravens living alongside our hermit pursued the two thieves for kilometers, and thanks to their cawing and attacks, the authorities were able to identify the murderers. The two ravens from this legend are depicted on the coat of arms of Einsiedeln.

Let’s continue with the legends. When the monastery’s first church was completed and everything was ready for its consecration, something unexpected happened. The bishop of Constance, who was to preside over the ceremony, had a vision: a voice told him that it was not necessary to consecrate the church because Christ had already done so, accompanied by angels and saints.

The next day, September 14, 948, just as the ceremony was about to begin, the bishop received the same message again: the church had already been consecrated by Christ. Faced with such an extraordinary event, he therefore decided to postpone the consecration.

In the year 934, a monk named Eberhard founded a monastery on the site of the hermitage where pilgrims had been venerating the Virgin Mary. The monastery’s location was named Einsiedeln, which, as I wrote earlier, means “place of hermits.”

En el Siglo XV aparece la imagen negra de la Virgen con el Niño, la que conocemos hoy. Aquí hay dos versiones, que la virgen con el humo de la velas fue adquiriendo el color negro con el paso de los años, una segunda que dice que la virgen fue pintada de negro.

Esta segunda versión nos diría que se oscureció a la Virgen con la intención de que el monasterio atrajera parte del fervor religioso que existía toda en Europa por las vírgenes negras. De las vírgenes negras habría mucho que hablar, pero no será en esta la publicación

Para otra ocasión también quedará la vida y obra del gran Parcelso, médico y alquimista, nacido también en Einsiedeln.

Finalizado este viaje al pasado, una visita en el presente tampoco deja indiferente. La abadía es un monumento deslumbrante y en el pueblo y sus cercanías, rodeado de montañas, con la presencia de un gran lago, se percibe una energía muy especial.

In the 15th century, the black image of the Virgin and Child—the one we know today—appeared. There are two versions of this story: one claims that the Virgin gradually turned black over the years due to candle smoke, while the other states that she was painted black.

This second version suggests that the Virgin was darkened with the intention of helping the monastery attract some of the religious fervor that existed throughout Europe for the Black Madonnas. There is much to say about the Black Madonnas, but that is beyond the scope of this publication.

The life and work of the great Paracelsus, a physician and alchemist who was also born in Einsiedeln, will also have to wait for another occasion.

Now that this journey into the past has come to an end, a visit in the present is equally captivating. The abbey is a stunning monument, and in the town and its surroundings—surrounded by mountains and with a large lake nearby—one can sense a very special energy.
