Many people often dream of travelling to a faraway country, visiting a particular monument, a specific natural setting, a wonder of the world, or simply exploring a particular town or village. It is, therefore, a specific place in the world that fascinates us or in which we have a particular interest, such as learning about its culture, history or traditions.

Muchos a veces sueñan con viajar algún país lejano, conocer un monumento en especial, un lugar con plena naturaleza determinado, una maravilla del mundo o simplemente recorrer una ciudad o pueblo en particular. Se trata entonces de un lugar determinado, específico en el mundo por el que podemos sentir fascinación o por el cual tenemos un interés específico, como conocer la cultura, la historia o tradiciones.

En mi caso particular, siempre he sentido una enorme fascinación por Egipto. Desde niña y ya luego en la adolescencia me gustaba estudiar desde su cultura, historia antigua y religión, aunque no por la religión en si misma sino por lo que significaba para sus habitantes. Este tema formaba parte de su vida cotidiana.

Recuerdo que en la secundaria nos dividieron en grupos de estudio con mis compañeras y por sorteo nos todo desarrollar la cultura egipcia. En ese momento creí que era casualidad, ahora sé que eso no existe. Yo estaba muy feliz porque me había tocado esa cultura antigua, mi favorita, sobre la romana o griega. Recuerdo que este trabajo fue en la asignatura de historia y que, en ese momento, yo tenía enciclopedias históricas que eran de mi madre y allí pude estudiar todo muy bien.

In my case, I have always felt a deep fascination with Egypt. Ever since I was a child, and later as a teenager, I enjoyed studying its culture, ancient history and religion, though not the religion itself, but rather what it meant to its people. This subject was an integral part of their daily lives.

I remember that in secondary school we were divided into study groups with my classmates and, by lot, we were all assigned to explore Egyptian culture. At the time I thought it was a coincidence; now I know that such a thing doesn’t exist. I was very happy because I’d been given that ancient culture, my favourite, rather than Roman or Greek. I remember that this project was for our history class and that, at the time, I had some historical encyclopaedias that belonged to my mother, and I was able to study everything thoroughly using them.

Pero no sólo eso, sino que teníamos que hacer una representación, una actuación de alguna parte de esa cultura y elegimos la momificación y todo su proceso con todo detalle. Por supuesto este tema no me resultó difícil, más bien disfruté toda la experiencia al máximo.

Cuando comencé la universidad, recuerdo que, una editorial sacaba a la venta, cada viernes, una revista coleccionable sobre Egipto, que se llamaba Egiptomanía. Con mucho sacrificio, a lo largo del tiempo pude comprarme todas las revistas y las tapas para encuadernar lo que luego serían libros. Ese para mí es un gran tesoro, aunque hoy todo esté en internet. Esos libros son para mi demasiado importantes. Hoy están al cuidado de Claudia, mi amiga, allá en Argentina, porque traérmelos en la mudanza era muy pesado y por lo tanto costoso. Pero por supuesto mi idea es traérmelos.

But that wasn’t all: we also had to put on a performance, a re-enactment of some aspect of that culture, and we chose mummification and the entire process in great detail. Of course, I didn’t find this topic difficult; in fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

When I started university, I remember that a publisher was bringing out a collectable magazine about Egypt every Friday, called Egiptomanía. With a lot of sacrifice, over time I managed to buy all the magazines and the covers to bind what would later become books. That is a great treasure to me, even though everything is on the internet today. Those books are far too important to me. They’re currently being looked after by my friend Claudia back in Argentina, because bringing them over when I moved was too much of a hassle and therefore too expensive. But of course, I fully intend to bring them over.

Mi fascinación por Egipto nunca se acaba, más cuando hay nuevas investigaciones y descubrimientos en torno, tanto a las pirámides, esfinge, momias, excavaciones y demás. Este gusto por esta cultura, pero sobre todo la antigua, es algo que no puedo explicar y por supuesto sería un sueño para mi estar en ese lugar. Sé que la emoción sería tan grande que lloraría.

Lo que más llama mi atención son las pirámides, su realización, los templos, la escritura en jeroglíficos, los dibujos y decoraciones, pero sobre todo su enseñanza ancestral y muchos misterios que ello encierra. Mucho de ese conocimiento se ha perdido hoy en día, pero antes se enseñaba de generación en generación y estamos hablando de más de 5000 años.

Ellos tenían un conocimiento de astronomía impresionante para la época, y como en este tema en muchos otros. El hecho de, porqué tenían, los egipcios, tantos dioses y no uno, a que llamaban dioses y hasta la posibilidad de que no fueran humanos. Esto último me lo he planteado, sobre todo en el tema de los faraones. Son sólo teorías mías, pero que están en mi mente desde siempre.

My fascination with Egypt never wanes, especially when there are new research findings and discoveries concerning the pyramids, the Sphinx, mummies, excavations and so on. This love for this culture, but above all for ancient Egypt, is something I cannot explain, and of course it would be a dream come true for me to be there. I know the emotion would be so overwhelming that I would cry.

What catches my attention most are the pyramids, their construction, the temples, hieroglyphic writing, the drawings and decorations, but above all their ancestral teachings and the many mysteries they hold. Much of that knowledge has been lost today, but it used to be passed down from generation to generation, and we’re talking about more than 5,000 years.

They had an impressive knowledge of astronomy for the time, and in this field as in many others. The question of why the Egyptians had so many gods and not just one, what they called gods, and even the possibility that they were not human. I have pondered this last point, particularly regarding the pharaohs. These are just my own theories, but they have always been on my mind.

Hace algunos años mi madre comenzó a ver un canal de YouTube sobre un hombre que sabía mucho de historia y que precisamente hablaba de Egipto. Al poco tiempo de creado en canal y enfocándose en diversos temas de historia antigua, Rafa, así es como se llama el dueño del canal, lo enfoco absolutamente en ese país y sólo ese. Además, con una compañera que también tiene una canal del mismo tema, organizan viajes a Egipto.

En estos viajes no muestran lo que es habitual en un tour, sino que van más allá, como tratar novedades, misterios, cosas interesantes que normalmente no se dicen en las noticias y que para personas como yo resultas geniales.

Es por eso que quise ilustrar este post con algunos videos de ese canal llamado Egipto Historia y también un video del otro canal que también es muy bueno llamado Egiptomanía.

A few years ago, my mum started watching a YouTube channel about a man who knew a lot about history and who happened to specialise in Egypt. Shortly after the channel was set up and had been covering various topics in ancient history, Rafa, that’s the channel owner’s name, decided to focus entirely on that country and that country alone. What’s more, together with a colleague who also runs a channel on the same subject, they organise trips to Egypt.

On these trips, they don’t just show you the usual sights you’d see on a standard tour; they go further, covering new developments, mysteries and interesting facts that aren’t usually mentioned in the news, which is brilliant for people like me.

That’s why I wanted to illustrate this post with a few videos from that channel, called Egipto Historia, as well as a video from the other channel, which is also very good, called Egiptomanía.

Por todo ello el tema de este mes se trata de que nos cuenten que lugar del mundo les fascina, a cuál viajaría si pudieran, ese lugar que les atrae y no saben porque, sea por la historia, por una belleza natural en particular o cualquier otra cosa. Que nos cuenten el porque de ese gusto por ese lugar en el mundo, que puede no ser un país completo puede ser una ciudad o pueblo en especial o lugares extraños como por ejemplo uno que encierre un misterio.

Po supuesto siempre lo que más cuenta es la experiencia personal, las anécdotas, y que mediante sus palabras nos hagan sentir el porque de esa fascinación. El post debe incluir videos que muestren el lugar, aunque sean videos cortos. Pueden ser uno o más videos. Por ejemplo, si el lugar favorito es el Himalaya que sea un video que muestre ese lugar, un documental o similar. La idea es que conozcamos más sobre él y las razones porque les gusta tanto.

Sé que es difícil encontrar canales verificados en YouTube, pero como ayuda les digo que los canales de viajes pueden tener los videos que buscan. Seguramente ya han visto muchos videos de ese lugar especial

Tell us why you love that place in the world, it doesn’t have to be a whole country, it could be a specific city or town, or even unusual places, such as one shrouded in mystery.
