The Random Magic of San Juan

No swimming. The warning signs are everywhere. Yet that doesn't stop a few people from jumping into the unpredictable sea. The problem with this particular area, according to the numerous signage around the beach, is the riptides that can drag a swimmer into the ocean. Fortunately, there are other places around this part of Puerto Rico with less turbulent waters.

The heat of the day is something else. I feel sluggish under the sun, so I close my eyes in the shade. I like watching the pelicans circle overhead, looking graceful in a prehistoric kind of way.

What sorcery is this?

The architecture is wild. You can't help but stand there in awe of the expressive designs that vary across different eras.

I'm melting in the heat. Sweating. I miss the cold weather. My legs ache from what seems like miles. I admit it's just a few blocks from where the UBER dropped me off, but I was still looking around thinking: Is there anyone selling snow-cones around here? Or coconuts, man, what I would give for a juicy coconut right now.

my pace quickens under the radiant sun until at last, there in the distance, I spot nestled against the blue sea, La Perla de San Juan.
