The Light of Spring

Spring is bursting throughout the city in all its vibrant colours. It was snowing petals in the middle of downtown the other day. As the breeze flowed through the flowers, it dislodged petals, which floated gently and settled on the ground.

I believe these are magnolias, but I'm not too sure

The stars of the show are the cherry blossom trees that are vibrant and full of floral aesthetics this time of year. There are a moderate 40,000- 43,000 trees spread out through the city. So, it is a visual feast wherever you go. There's no escape from silky beauty!

Walking under the trees you feel enveloped into nature's sweet mysteries. They transform the world, announcing without apologies that spring has sprung.

A Canadian moment

The history of cherry blossom trees in Vancouver goes back to 1925 when the mayors of Kobe and Yokohama gifted the city 500 hundred trees to honour the service of Japanese Canadian veterans who fought in the first world war.

Since those early days, the population of cherry trees has exploded, and it is a popular activity to celebrate their blossoming with festivals and pilgrimages to various points in the city.

There is a dark side to all this flower worship. It drives segments of the population out of their minds. Intoxicated by beauty, they begin to climb the trees, pull on the branches, pluck their petals, and commit histrionic acts of cherry blossom madness. So, let us hope that fine citizens of this fair city behave and leave the cherry blossoms alone.
