Nemo Science Mueseum in the Rain 3 photos

maritime mueseum 3.jpg

The rain came from nowhere, I mean an hour ago it have been sunny, sunny enough for me to venture out of the city a little and now I was on my way back to the hotel, I'd taken the tram to the end of the line and was now wandering toward the Nemo Science Mueseum and the heavens opened, but I think the grey skies and the wet green patina of the building works.

Amsterdam’s NEMO Science Museum is fairly imposing in the rain (or I imagine the clear blue sky but I wouldn't know) it’s big, ship-like, copper-green building rising out of the Oosterdok (that I think means Eastern Dock to us English speakers. It designed by star Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in 1997. This means he (or his people) where likely working on this at the same time as the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Noumea which opened in 1998 - which I visited last year, it's like I've accidently become a Renzo Piano fan

Piano built it right on top of the IJ tunnel, so the curved tunnel actually inspired the building’s sweeping, hull-like shape, making it look like a giant vessel docked in the harbour. The copper cladding has weathered over time into its signature green patina, and the sloping roof doubles as a public “piazza” with city views, plus a green roof packed with sedum, herbs and other plants.
