The photo I want to share with you this week is of the Chaukhandi Stupa, located in Sarnath, about 8 kilometers north of Varanasi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. I took this photo last April while on a pilgrimage to the famous Bodh Gaya in India. India is home to many ancient structures. So I took a lot of photos.

This pagoda is different from other pagodas and has a unique architectural style. What is unique is that it is not perfectly round like other pagodas. The architecture is also of two types. You will see two different characteristics. This is an ancient architectural masterpiece, and what makes it unique is the The Octagonal Tower on top of the pagoda.


When asked about the reason for the two different architectural styles, the lower pagoda was a Buddhist structure and was originally a square brick mound with steps. It was built with bricks and mortar during the Gupta Period between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.

The Octagonal Tower: At the top of the pagoda, you will see a small octagonal structure (tower). This is not a Buddhist structure, but a Mughal architectural addition built on top of the pagoda by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century (1588). The Chaukhandi Stupa stands on the spot where Lord Buddha first met the five ascetics. From here, he walked to the Deer Park to preach his first sermon, the Dhammacakka Sutta. Today, the Chaukhandi Stupa is well-preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It remains a must-visit historical site for both Buddhist pilgrims and tourists visiting Sarnath.
