English

A Spanish quote on a street in Madrid, taken from a work by the Spanish writer Rosalía de Castro, who was an advocate for women's rights and hailed from the autonomous region of Galicia.

Incidentally, Rosalía de Castro is not related to Fidel Castro, at least not directly.

Only songs of independence and freedom have passed my lips, even though all around me, even from the cradle, I could sense the clanking of the chains that were meant to imprison me forever, for a woman’s inheritance is the shackles of slavery

Lieders, Rosalía de Castro (1858)

Rosalía de Castro’s words are so powerful. That quote shows how deeply she understood the struggles women faced, turning her voice into one of freedom and resistance. Amazing how a simple street inscription in Madrid can carry such timeless strength and remind us of the fight for equality. 😍
