XPLpic is a world map where you can position up to ten photos per entry and optionally add additional information. Hive is not required to use it, so people outside the Hive ecosystem can use the tool as well.
Over the past few days, I have had the opportunity to explore its various features in detail. For my personal needs, XPLpic is more than sufficient. I have found it to be a useful tool for documenting places and stays that are interesting to me in one way or another.

Note about the images:
The screenshots used in this post are taken directly from XPLpic and show different features and views of the tool. The only exception is the map of Germany further down, which shows my previous analog way of documenting the motorhome parking places I have visited using magnets.
The status bar below the map shows the latest entries.
To create a new entry, simply click the â+ Add Photosâ button and the input form opens.
Since I use an iPhone, all I have to do is add a photo. The location is then determined from the information stored in the image1. As far as I know, the location currently has to be entered manually on Android.
And that's basically it. Everything else, such as a title or description, is optional and can also be added later.

One feature I particularly like is the ability to assign entries to a common trip.
In the input form, simply click âPart of a tripâ. If you have already created a trip, you can select it. Alternatively, you can create a new trip using âNew tripâ and give it a descriptive name.
The advantage is obvious: when you click on a location belonging to a trip, the connections to the other locations of that trip are displayed on the map. At the same time, the status bar at the bottom only shows the locations belonging to that trip.
This makes it quite easy to navigate through your own route.
If I want to remove the route connections from the map again, I simply click the small âXâ in the lower status bar next to the thumbnails.

It is not necessary to enter the locations in the correct order from the beginning.
Using the âRecorderâ function, the order of the individual stops can be corrected afterwards.

The âTrip Pageâ displays the complete route in a clear and detailed overview.
In my example, I named the route âFrankâ. The main reason for this trip was to visit a friend named Frank. Looking back, I have to admit that this was not the most useful choice of name. đ
For future trips, I will definitely come up with more descriptive names.

Since I travel quite often with my camper, I see a very practical use for XPLpic.
I can document all the campsites and motorhome parking places where I stop, together with the information that is most important to me. This is where I see one of the biggest advantages for my future travels.
In the description, for example, I can note whether there is good mobile reception, whether facilities for fresh water and waste disposal are available, or any other details I noticed at the location.
To make these entries easier to find later, I also add the tags #Stellplatz and #RV. This allows me to specifically filter for these entries when searching.

After my first few days with XPLpic, I see the tool less as a traditional social network and more as a personal geographical record of my travels and stays.
And that's exactly what I like about it.
I don't necessarily need lots of additional features. What matters to me is that I can quickly capture a place with photos, add some information, and find it again on the map later.
Especially in combination with my camper trips, this can gradually become a personal collection of the motorhome parking places and interesting locations I have visited.

Until now, I have marked the motorhome parking places I have visited on a metal map of Germany using magnets. That at least allowed me to see at a glance where I had already been. However, these little magnets are of course only a very basic way of documenting my travels.
With XPLpic, I can make this documentation much more detailed in the future. For a motorhome parking place, for example, I can store several photos â of the site itself, the fresh water and waste disposal facilities, or the surrounding area â together with my personal notes, all in one place. At the same time, I can see exactly where the location is on the map. So my metal map can take a little break in the future. đ

Another thing I have noticed positively is how quickly the developer responds to questions and requests for changes. Especially with a project like this, I think direct contact with the developer is important. You don't get the feeling that finished software has simply been put online somewhere and left to its own devices. Instead, XPLpic still feels like a project that is actively being developed, with user suggestions actually being taken into account.
And perhaps that is the biggest benefit of XPLpic for me: I am not just documenting my travels for the moment, but can also look back later and see where I have actually been.

In der Eingabemaske klickt man dazu auf âPart of a tripâ.

Meine Metallkarte darf also zukĂŒnftig etwas entlastet werden.

Introducing XPLpic
What's New With XPLPic
1. A small privacy note: Photos can contain location data and other metadata. Since XPLpic can use this information to determine the location of a photo, it is worth checking your device permissions and photo settings before uploading. For my travel documentation, I use this feature intentionally â but everyone should decide for themselves what information they want to share.
Hey neat! It would be cool to look back on past trips and even share them with others.
Maybe pinmapple or @worldmappin could take some hints as far as simplicity and functionality?
I also enjoy using Worldmappin, but I see two different use cases for the two platforms.
In my travel reports, I have so far focused mainly on motorhome parking places and then described the surrounding area as well. I am now separating these two aspects.
For my travel reports, I no longer need to include all the details about the parking place. Instead, I can simply add a link to the corresponding XPLpic entry. This keeps the travel report more focused on the place, the surroundings and what I experienced there, while XPLpic can take care of the detailed information about the parking place.
So for me, they actually complement each other quite nicely.
Damn straight! Love how you use them in combination.
what a cool little tool. and easy to use.
Thanks! Thatâs exactly what I like about it â simple, useful, and without too much fuss. đ
Great to read about your use of the site! Would renaming a trip be a feature that you'd be interested in? Shouldn't be a difficult add.
As much as I like technology and tracking stuff on a computer, nothing beats a physical map at the end of the day! Something about the tactileness of it is a feeling that can never be recreated.
And the privacy notice is very important! I live in a very large city but even then don't post pictures from home. We do strip all other details from the uploaded picture other than the location(which you can mess with to set slightly offset if it's too close to home) and the date taken(again which you can change to what you want).
This is correct due to a privacy feature that android devices have which the only way around seems to create an application which can be downloaded from the App store. This might be the way I go in the near future if it comes to it.
Yes, I think being able to rename a trip would definitely be useful. I had actually already thought about whether I should redefine a trip and reassign the entries to it. But I decided against it because I wasn't sure whether that might leave orphaned trips in the selection list.
And I will definitely keep my metal wall map with its magnetic markers as well. It's always interesting to see how visitors react to it, and it has already led to some really nice conversations.
But of course, the physical map doesn't give me any additional information. And I can't count how often I've already thought: Where was that one motorhome parking place again? đ
So I think the two approaches complement each other quite nicely: the metal map for the memories and the conversations, and XPLpic for all the details I might want to find again later.
I've implemented the trip rename(as well as adding a description to trips), and it should be deployed tonight!
