Hello everyone! This post is my entry to @qurator's photo quest on Onion. but it is late, instead of photos I thought about sharing my knowledge of Ayurveda along with some photos.
Ayurveda encompasses various aspects of leading a healthy life including lifestyle, diet, and home remedies. Today, I will be discussing the health benefits of onions one of home remedy.

Ayurveda recognizes onions as having various health benefits. They are considered anti-aging, rejuvenating, and act as a blood purifier and aphrodisiac. Onions are also believed to improve intelligence, increase skin complexion, and reduce hair fall. However, Ayurveda does not support their excessive usage as they are considered tamasic in nature, which can make people irritable. Onions have cooling energetics and are recommended as a great summer food. They are sweet in taste, promote proper digestion, and reduce the burning sensation by cooling the digestive tract. In Ayurveda, onion's healing properties make it more of a medicine than just food.

Onions have a strong pungent smell and are used in various forms to add flavor to dishes. Different types of onions such as white, red, yellow, shallot, and spring onion can also be used raw in salads. Chopping onions produces a volatile, sulfur-rich oil that causes teary eyes by activating the tear glands.

Combining raw onions into your diet during the summer season is recommended to protect yourself from heat stroke. Onions also help ease bowel movements, thereby managing various digestive disorders.

According to Ayurveda, onions may help improve erection time due to their aphrodisiac properties. External application of onion juice, paste, or oil helps remove excessive dryness, prevent hair fall, and promote hair growth due to its oily and healing properties.

Ayurveda avoids excessive consumption of onions, especially in people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Onions are known as Allium cepa, Plandu, Sukand, Piyaaz, Pyaj, Piyas, Kando, Kanda, etc.

In diabetes, due to an aggravation of Vata and impaired digestion. leads to an accumulation of Ama (toxic remains in the body due to improper digestion) in the pancreatic cells, impairing the function of insulin. Onion calms aggravated Vata and improves digestive fire. It improves metabolism and maintains insulin levels, helping to maintain blood glucose levels.

Onion consumption controls the enlargement of the prostate and lowers the risk of prostate cancer.

Eating onions helps to calm Vata and remove excess mucus from the lungs, providing relief from asthma symptoms.

Cough is commonly known as a Kapha disorder in Ayurveda, which is caused by the accumulation of mucus in the respiratory tract. Onion helps to reduce cough when used after frying with Ghee, as it removes accumulated mucus from the lungs.

Anorexia or loss of appetite, known as Aruchi in Ayurveda, is due to the accumulation of Ama (toxic remains in the body due to improper digestion). Ama blocks the gastrointestinal channels of the body, leading to anorexia. Eating onion helps to improve Agni (digestive fire) and reduce Ama, which is the prime reason for loss of appetite, due to its cooling property.

Ayurveda has many uses of onion as a medicine. Using raw onion slices reduces menstrual problems, acts as a blood thinner, and prevents and dissolves blood clots, reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease. Inhalation of the aroma of raw smashed onion reduces dizziness/fainting. Chewing raw onion slices kills microbes from the oral cavity. Regular consumption of onion is good for memory and the nervous system. Eating vegetable salad with onions acts as an antioxidant and revitalizes the body.
