The city is looking alive (and surprisingly clean-shaven) as the soccer fest gets underway. I was taking pictures on one of the streets that has been closed to traffic and decked out with all manner of art installations and leisure structures to enhance the world cup experience. I walked the length of the street in the evening. There was so much to see and do there. It is called Granville street and has been closed for several blocks so that world cup revelers have a good time downtown throughout the duration of the tournament.

I almost missed this ball hidden behind the construction site.

Then things began to get a little weird.

It was nice to see people out and about. It hasn't really been this lively since the Olympics in 2010, and it was outright deserted during the early days of the Covid pandemic. I walked these same street then, and it was tough to see the emptiness and hear the silence. Very apocalyptic. I looked around. Not a single soul in sight. Windows boarded up with wood panels. It felt like the end of civilization. The end of humanity. So give me noise, music, and celebration any time of day. Give me your deep-fried goodies, your strongest brews, and mysterious vapours. Give me the wild shouts, and the ole ole that rise above the street towards that urban sky.

As I was walking down the street, I stumbled on a soccer ball and accidently fell inside a McDonald's restaurant. One thing led to another, and soon I found myself with a meal in my hands, including one of the collectible cups.

David Beckham!
