[ENG-SPN] Where the Sea Embraces Legend / Donde el mar abraza la leyenda

Even far from the heights of those impenetrable inland mountains, like Amboto, in one of whose caves dwells Andra Mari, the Mother Goddess of rich Basque mythology, pilgrims traveling along the fantastic paths that crisscross the fragmented spine of a lost world—the Cantabrian Coast—find solace upon arriving at this surprising place: the seaside hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

Behind them lie important towns, such as the wounded Guernica, the port of Bermeo, with its charming taverns and txokos (traditional Basque social clubs), and Mundaka, the left-hand wave whose wild sea is constantly sought after by American and Australian surfers, who dream of riding the rugged waves of the Cantabrian Sea, famous for its untamed nature.

Two hundred and forty-one steps separate the pilgrim from the summit where the small hermitage dedicated to Saint John the Baptist stands—the one who had to decrease so that Christ might increase. These numbers, when added together, bring us to the quintessential magic number: seven. But the true magic, the true beauty, the kind capable of moving even the most hardened heart, lies in the surroundings, where the most striking impression is that of being in a place that is undeniably charismatic and special. Perhaps that is why it was considered one of the best locations for the popular series 'Game of Thrones'. For wandering the paths of the North is always an invitation to reverie.

Aun alejados de esas alturas de esos impenetrables montes del interior, como el Amboto, en una de cuyas cuevas tiene su morada Andra Mari, la Diosa Madre de la rica mitología vasca, los peregrinos que se desplazan por los fantásticos caminos que recorren esa fragmentada espina dorsal de un mundo perdido, que es la Cornisa Cantábrica, se sienten reconfortados al llegar a este sorprendente lugar: la ermita marinera de San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.

Atrás quedan poblaciones relevantes, como la malherida Guernica, la portuaria Bermeo, con sus entrañables tabernas y ‘txokos’ o Mundaka, la ola izquierda de cuyo bravo mar es buscado constantemente por surferos norteamericanos y australianos, que sueñan con cabalgar los curtidos lomos de un mar, el Cantábrico, famoso por su indomable carácter.

Doscientos cuarenta y uno son los escalones que separan al peregrino de la cima donde se asienta la pequeña ermita dedicada a la figura de aquel que tenía que menguar para que Cristo creciera, San Juan Bautista, números, que, sumados, nos remiten al número mágico por excelencia: el siete. Pero la verdadera magia, la verdadera belleza, esa capaz de motivar al corazón más insensible, no es otra que un entorno, donde la impresión más notable, no es otra que sentirse en un lugar sin duda alguna carismático y especial. Quizás por ello, no en vano fue considerado como uno de los mejores escenarios de la popular serie ‘Juego de Tronos’. Y es que, jugar por los caminos del Norte es siempre una invitación a la ensoñación.
