[ENG-SPN] Villalcázar de Sirga: The Wrath That Shook the Templars / Villalcázar de Sirga: la ira que estremeció a los templarios

IMG_0174.JPG

This was the most significant encomienda (commandery) held by the Knights Templar within that labyrinth of emotions, secrets, and mysteries that Old Castile remains to this day. It is said that medieval pilgrims were left absolutely awestruck upon arriving at this pivotal site along the Camino de Santiago, struck by its monumental beauty.

We find ourselves in the province of Palencia, having left behind—not too far away—the Campos Góticos (Gothic Fields), whose harshness could freeze a pilgrim’s very blood, while simultaneously tempering their resilience. The village is called Villalcázar de Sirga; all that remains today of that once-mighty Templar commandery—a place that was as imposing as it was welcoming and hospitable to pilgrims—is a monumental, albeit damaged, church dedicated to Santa María la Blanca.

Some might imagine that this grand commandery drew down the wrath of God—much like the "Tower" card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot—because of its own hubris. Yet the truly striking aspect that should invite reflection and inspire humilities was devastated by a different, more formidable kind of wrath: the wrath of Nature. Specifically, an earthquake that struck in 1755, centered in Lisbon, hundreds of kilometers away.
