[ENG-SPN] Valderredible: The Labyrinth of Time / Valderredible: El Laberinto del Tiempo

Always keeping in mind that adventure is adventure, and feeling like the protagonists of Jules Verne's marvelous novel, 'Captains Courageous,' we set sail for the Mystery, directing our restless steps towards a beautiful area of resilient, magical Spain, which, undoubtedly frozen in that surprising Borgesian loop where yesterday is like today and also like the future, seems stopped in time: Valderredible.

Valderredible, although it shares some prominence with Palencia and northern Burgos, is possibly the largest, wildest, and least known territory in Cantabria, a region that sleeps peacefully amidst the salty winds carried by the waters of the Cantabrian Sea and the fearsome zephyrs that descend upon its green valleys from the misty peaks of the Picos de Europa, leaving behind, all together, an eternal air of folklore and legend that preserves the archetypal essence of a uniquely ancestral heritage.

Characterized by its lush mountains and the crossroads of its ancient paths, which in many cases seem to revolve around a monumental labyrinth of intersecting spiritualities, where the unsettling presence of witches and other apparitions is not ruled out, the predominant feature is that surprising return to the caves, the maternal place where the first cults arose and where, calamities and invasions aside, an eremitic phenomenon flourished. This phenomenon not only left behind veritable medieval cemeteries carved into the rock, but also a proliferation of hermitages and cave churches, whose enigmatic presence is surpassed only by their rugged beauty.

Teniendo siempre como premisa que la aventura es la aventura y sintiéndonos como los protagonistas de la maravillosa novela de Julio Verne que lleva por título ‘Capitanes intrépidos’, en la presente ocasión ponemos rumbo hacia el Misterio, dirigiendo nuestros inquietos pasos hacia una zona preciosa de la resiliente España Mágica, que, sin duda detenida en ese sorprendente bucle borgiano donde el ayer es como y el hoy y también como el todavía, parece detenida en el tiempo: Valderredible.

Valderredible, aunque comparte cierto protagonismo con Palencia y el norte de Burgos, posiblemente sea el territorio más extenso, más agreste y más desconocido de esa misma Cantabria que sueña apaciblemente entre los vientos salinos que arrastran las aguas del Cantábrico y los temibles céfiros que descienden hacia sus verdes valles desde las brumosas cimas de los Picos de Europa, dejando, entre todos, aires eternos de folklore y leyenda que guardan la esencia arquetípica de una herencia singularmente ancestral.

Caracterizado por la frondosidad de sus montes, las encrucijadas de sus milenarios caminos, que, en muchos casos, parecen girar en torno a un monumental laberinto de espiritualidades encontradas, donde no se descarta, tampoco, la inquietante presencia de brujas y otros espantos, la nota predominante, es esa sorprendente vuelta hacia las cavernas, lugar materno donde surgieron los primeros cultos y donde, calamidades e invasiones aparte, floreció un fenómeno eremítico que no sólo dejó verdaderos cementerios medievales excavados en la roca, sino también, la proliferación de ermitas e iglesias rupestres, cuya enigmática presencia tan sólo es superada por su agreste belleza.
