[ENG-SPN] Torrecaballeros: The Medieval Mirror Where We Still Recognize Ourselves / Torrecaballeros: El Espejo Medieval donde Aún Nos Reconocemos

P1210782.JPG

Like Hesse, I don't believe that humanity is better or worse, but rather that it is always the same. This thought is perhaps reinforced when I pause long enough before one of these ancient, timeless chronicles—Romanesque churches—and I believe I observe, in their referential archetypes, that we continue to be subject to the same biases and conditioning that kept the lives of medieval man under close scrutiny.

Today we find ourselves before the Romanesque church of Torrecaballeros, also located at the foot of the N-111 highway that connects Soria with Segovia. This highway, in fact, reveals to us, by default, the very same route followed by the merry guilds of medieval stonemasons—please don't confuse them with Shakespeare and his merry gossips—who left their chronicle for all to see in a world that, perhaps now more evolved, is, at heart, just as imprisoned by the same chains.

The Torrecaballeros temple, then, with its archetypes, its references, and the underlying pessimism of its constraints, is another Pandora's Box, whose lid we have always deliberately left open, not because we don't know how to close it, but because, by nature, we seem to prefer to leave it open. The curtain may rise and fall, the actors and settings may change, but the underlying theme of the play always remains the same.

There are good people and bad people in this world, so if we treat the world well and build relationships with good people, people will treat us well and treat us well.

True: that would be ideal, to treat others as you would like to be treated.

This is a really thoughtful way to look at history. It’s interesting how so much has changed, yet people are still dealing with the same feelings and limits.

The settings change, but deep down, we remain at the mercy of our biases; they're in our genes. That's why these places also teach us to restrain them, to reflect on them. That's their power.
