[ENG-SPN] The Hidden Value of Silent Villages / El valor oculto de los pueblos silenciosos

There is no doubt that time, the inexorable long-distance runner, does not pass in vain, and like the tortoise in Aesop's famous fable, it always ends up winning the race against the hare. The same is true for us and also for our deepest roots, which are, in fact, that great anthropological and cultural wealth, certainly diminished: our villages.

The traveler who one day arrives by chance in this village, San Andrés de San Pedro, may be blinded, thinking that the silences are the prelude to a rural exodus like the one they have been observing along much of their journey through the winding roads of the Highlands, whose secrets are not easy to unravel, especially if we stubbornly refuse to let that initial impression resurface, the one in which everything seemed new and, above all, surprising.

Therefore, its apparent solitude should not be underestimated, but rather, above all, the mythical architecture that characterizes it should be valued, with typical houses where one can still appreciate, attached to the entrance, those same medieval stables that unified all the family elements; see, a little further on, the building of a school, more or less modern, which replaces the two it had at the beginning and which define some neighbors concerned about the education of their children; It is worth noting that, although heavily remodeled and subject to the capricious demands of later fashions and styles, this small church still retains, albeit few, some details of its Romanesque origins. Furthermore, a closer look at the surrounding houses, behind whose curtains the visitor sometimes feels inexorably watched, reveals curious remnants of a past rich in nuances and symbolism. These include a curious medieval funerary stele and part of a rough Calvary, likely also medieval, which now form part of the infill of a fence. Far from being inconsequential, these finds provide the starting point for deeper research, allowing us to better understand the history of both the site and the fantastical environment in which it is located.

No cabe duda de que el tiempo, inexorable corredor de fondo, no pase en balde y como la tortuga de la famosa fábula de Esopo, siempre termina ganándole la carrera a la liebre. Lo mismo ocurre con nosotros y también con nuestras raíces más profundas, que son, de hecho, esa gran riqueza, antropológica y cultural, ciertamente venida a menos: nuestros pueblos.

El viajero que un día llega por casualidad a este pueblo, San Andrés de San Pedro, puede adolecer de ceguera, pensando que los silencios son el preludio a un éxodo rural como el que ha venido observando en buena parte de su viaje por los tortuosos caminos de unas Tierras Altas, cuyos secretos no son fáciles de desentrañar, sobre todo, si nos obstinamos en no dejar aflorar aquella primera mirada en la que todo nos parecía novedoso y, sobre todo, sorprendente.

Por ello, no hay que desdeñar su aparente soledad y sí, sobre todo, valorar esa mítica arquitectura que lo caracteriza, con casas típicas donde todavía se pueden apreciar, anexas a la entrada, aquellas mismas cuadras medievales que unificaban todos los elementos familiares; ver, un poco más allá, el edificio de una escuela, más o menos moderna, que sustituye a los dos que tuvo en un principio y que definen a unos vecinos preocupados por la formación de sus hijos; observar, que, aunque muy remodelada y rendida a los caprichosos requerimientos de modas y estilos posteriores, una pequeña iglesia que todavía, aunque escasos, conserva algunos detalles de sus orígenes románicos y además, echando un vistazo más detallado a esas mismas casas, detrás de cuyos visillos, hay ocasiones en los que el visitante se siente inexorablemente observado, ver curiosos restos de un pasado rico en matices y simbolismo, como demuestran la curiosa estela funeraria medieval y parte de un tosco calvario, probablemente medieval también, que ahora forman parte del relleno de un vallado, pero, que, lejos de ser intrascendentes, son datos para el comienzo de investigaciones más profundas, que nos hagan comprender mejor la historia, tanto del lugar, como del entorno tan fantástico en el que se encuentra.
