[ENG-SPN] The Enigma of Mary Magdalene Among the Stones of the Alcarria / El enigma de María Magdalena entre las piedras de la Alcarria

It would have been too strange to travel through a land brimming with clues and mysteries of the past, as the Alcarria region certainly is, and not stumble upon one of the great myths of all time, which, even today, when American astronauts have once again orbited the enigmatic far side of the moon, continues to ignite all kinds of debates: Mary Magdalene.

We found her trace in a small village called Valdeavellano, near that other impressive cultural center we will soon be directing you to, Brihuega, in an old 12th-century Romanesque church, whose eroded stone seems even older and whose interior holds some curiosities, little known or completely unknown to the general public.

Despite being a figure mistreated since the beginnings of Christianity, the cult of Mary Magdalene was very popular, precisely until the 12th century, when a fundamental figure, incomprehensibly relegated to the background until then, was rediscovered: the figure of the Mother; that is, Mary. Another great enigma of this church is its coffered ceiling, probably Gothic from the 14th century, which, mysteriously upside down, depicts a terrible apocalyptic beast stalking terrified figures.

Hubiese resultado demasiado extraño recorrer una tierra repleta de indicios y misterios del pasado, como es, ciertamente, la Alcarria y no habernos tropezado con uno de los grandes mitos de todos los tiempos, que, incluso hoy en día, cuando los astronautas estadounidenses han vuelto a orbitar la desconcertante cara oculta de la luna, todavía continúa encendiendo todo tipo de debates: María Magdalena.

Encontramos su rastro en un pueblecito, de nombre Valdeavellano y cercano a ese otro imponente centro cultural al que os dirigiremos próximamente, Brihuega, en una vieja iglesia románica del siglo XII, cuya erosionada piedra parece todavía mucho más antigua y cuyo interior esconde algunas curiosidades, poco o nada conocidas por el público en general.

A pesar de ser una figura maltratada desde los inicios del Cristianismo, el culto a María Magdalena fue muy popular, precisamente hasta ese mismo siglo XII, en el que volvió a recuperarse una figura primordial, que, incomprensiblemente, había estado prácticamente en segundo plano hasta entonces: la figura de la Madre; es decir, de María. Otro gran enigma añadido a esta iglesia es su artesonado, probablemente gótico del siglo XIV, que, misteriosamente colocado al revés, muestra a una terrible bestia apocalíptica acechando a unos aterrados personajes.
