[ENG-SPN] Pastrana and the Orders of Medieval Mystery / Pastrana y las Órdenes del Misterio Medieval

Until 1541, when their properties were seized by papal bull, the Knights of Calatrava remained the lords of Pastrana. In a way, they also emulated the Knights Templar, whom some researchers consider a "covert order," settling near the Jewish and Muslim quarters. They often served as a protective shield against intolerance and, moreover, drew upon their knowledge.

Walking through the narrow streets of Pastrana, especially around the famous Fountain of the Four Spouts, commissioned by the first Prince of Éboli—although some believe it was built on the site of an earlier fountain, probably of Romanesque origin—is a true historical adventure worth savoring and, above all, allowing yourself to be swept away by the magic of the past.

Because it undoubtedly contains all the necessary ingredients for a magnificent historical novel—if not on the scale of Ken Follett's bestsellers, then at least capable of entertaining an audience eager for medieval thrills. It brings together such charismatic and powerful elements as the house of the Knight of Calatrava, the ancient Jewish synagogue, and the headquarters of those fierce hounds of God: the Holy Inquisition. All of these elements, both together and separately, define captivating stories that, in many cases, became part of the very essence of a people: their legends and traditions.

Hasta el año 1541, cuando sus propiedades fueron enajenadas por Bula papal, permanecieron los caballeros calatravos como dueños y señores de Pastrana y en cierta manera, imitaron también a los caballeros templarios, a los que algunos investigadores consideran como una ‘orden encubierta’, instalándose en las proximidades de las Juderías y de los barrios musulmanes, sirviendo, en muchas ocasiones, de escudo protector frente a la intolerancia y nutriéndose, además, de sus posibles conocimientos.

Pasear por las callejas de Pastrana, sobre todo, tomando como centro geométrico la famosa fuente de los Cuatro Caños, mandada construir por el primer Príncipe de Éboli -aunque hay quien piensa que se hizo sobre una fuente anterior, probablemente de origen románico- no deja de ser toda una aventura histórica que merece la pena saborear y, sobre todo, dejarse llevar por la ensoñación.

Porque en ella, sin duda alguna, convergen los ingredientes suficientes como para hacer una grandiosa novela histórica, si no de la magnitud de los grandes best-sellers de Ken Follet, sí, al menos, para entretener a un público ávido de emociones medievales, pues en ella convergen elementos tan carismáticos y poderosos, como la casa del caballero calatravo, la antigua sinagoga judía y la casa de esos fieros sabuesos de Dios: la Santa Inquisición. Elementos, todos ellos, que definen, tanto juntos como separados, suculentas historias, que, en muchas ocasiones, terminaron formando parte de lo más esencial de un pueblo, como son, sus leyendas y tradiciones.
