To conclude a visit to a place as culturally rich as Brihuega, one must delve into another of its fascinating ancient mysteries, which, without a doubt, as one of the great fathers of Surrealism might say, invites us to visit one of those other worlds that fortunately still exist within this one: its labyrinthine network of caves.

Extending like an extraordinary maze, especially throughout the historic center of the old medieval town, and in many cases with galleries that are either unpublished or little explored, the caves of Brihuega immerse us not only in the fantastic architecture of the depths where hands—likely Celtiberian, Roman, Visigothic, Jewish, and Christian—left their mark beneath the earth, surely with different motives, but ultimately, all focused on one: concealment.

We could speculate at length about the reasons for this concealment, including modern accounts that describe these sublime galleries as cellars and pantries, where, in certain eras, people sought refuge from other dangers. But upon entering their gloomy interiors—at least those areas open to the public, meticulously following the signs to avoid getting lost—we cannot help but reflect on those fantastic legends and traditions that, among other wonders of Antiquity, place one of the most sought-after objects of all time in these lands: the Table or Mirror of Solomon. In short: an unmissable place for both adventure and speculation.

Finalizar la visita a un lugar con tanta riqueza cultural como Brihuega, requiere introducirse en otro de sus fascinantes misterios ancestrales, que, sin duda alguna, como diría uno de los grandes padres del Surrealismo, nos invita a visitar uno de esos otros mundos que afortunadamente todavía están en éste: su laberíntica red de cuevas.

Extendiéndose como un extraordinario dédalo, sobre todo por el centro histórico de la vieja ciudad medieval y en muchos casos con galerías inéditas o poco o nada exploradas, las cuevas de Brihuega nos introducen, de lleno, no sólo en la fantástica arquitectura de las profundidades donde manos probablemente celtíberas, romanas, visigodas, judías y cristianas fueron dejando su huella bajo la tierra seguramente con motivos distintos, pero, en el fondo, redundantes en uno solo: la ocultación.

Podríamos especular largo y tendido sobre los motivos de esa ocultación, donde no han de faltar, tampoco, las reseñas modernas que hacían de estas sublimes galerías bodegas y despensas y donde, en determinadas épocas, los hombres se protegían de peligros alternativos, pero, accediendo a sus lóbregos interiores -al menos, a aquellos que está permitido visitar, siguiendo escrupulosamente las indicaciones para no perderse- no podemos, sino pensar en esas fantásticas leyendas y tradiciones, que, entre otras maravillas de la Antigüedad, sitúan por estas tierras uno de los objetos más buscados de todos los tiempos: la Mesa o el Espejo de Salomón. En definitiva: un lugar imperdible tanto para la aventura como para la especulación.
