All Chirpy On the Western Coast

(edited)

As its name suggests, Olympic Village is a neighbourhood that was initially built to house athletes for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympics games. Afterwards, the units were repurposed for swanky living on the outskirts of downtown proper, and it has now turned into a pleasant and vibrant neighbourhood right on the shores of a narrow Pacific inlet called False Creek. I happened to be hovering around the neighbourhood the other day, when I came across The Birds sculpture.

This area is a recently developed zone, relatively speaking, so there are still many natural spaces not too far from there. It’s very fitting to have this pair of oversized sparrows in the plaza. They fit just right.

The 18-feet tall sculptures by artist Myfanwy MacLeod depict a male and female house sparrow. The pieces have undergone structural changes for a variety of reasons, which include people monkeying around them and causing damage. Not too worry, however, I noticed there was already someone monitoring the situation.

Those giant sparrows!!! Absolutely marvellous right in the middle of the city – I love it!

They definitely cheer up the place and break the monotony of so much glass and cement.

Super nice! I like sparrows of all kinds! Many people think sparrows are like rats. I like rats too!

They're a lively species. In North America, they were introduced by the European settlers.
