My husband and I are also at that point of doing as much as we can, and only occasionally hiring somebody to help out when we're desperate. Getting old is not for the faint of heart. We do have an HOA, but it has very few requirements about one's property. Just basic things like no shooting allowed, and no trailer houses, and no junk cars sitting around. Nobody cares if we don't mow our "lawn", which is mostly weeds, anyway.
Getting old — or as we like to call it around here "olding" — is definitely not for the faint of heart!
It feels a bit strange that our HOA has gotten as militant as it has, given that 60 years ago this neighborhood started as a place where hippies would buy a plot of land and I either live in tents or cabins and go salmon fishing on the bay below. I guess everything has become gentrified to keep the peace with wealthy California retirees moving here.
It sounds like it was quite interesting 60 years ago!
