End of season harvests. Getting ready for winter

IMG_20260830_143404.jpg

As the late summer sun begins to dip lower over the hills of Wales, there is a distinct shift in the air that signals the closing of another bountiful growing season. This week marked my final trip to the garden allotments to gather the last remaining treasures of the year. Walking through the quiet plots with an empty basket in hand, I felt that familiar, bittersweet mix of gratitude and nostalgia that every gardener knows. The vibrant greens of midsummer are softening into gold, and the earth is preparing for its well-deserved winter rest, but not before delivering one final, spectacular harvest.

Down on my lower plot, the harvest was a wonderful, eclectic mix of late-season staples. I managed to gather a final handful of crisp lettuce, a few sun-warmed tomatoes, plump cucumbers, and a scattering of courgettes alongside their oversized cousin, the marrow. While the salads are destined for the kitchen table to be enjoyed fresh straight away, absolutely nothing goes to waste here. Whatever we cannot finish over the next few days will become a five-star feast for the chickens, who are always more than happy to help with the clearing up and turn our garden leftovers into rich, golden-yoked eggs.

Moving up to the orchard, the scene was entirely different, dominated by the rich, deep colors and sweet aromas of autumn fruit. The branches were heavy with the final yields of crisp apples, sweet pears, and beautiful, dusty-purple damson plums. Gathering these fruits felt like collecting edible gems, each one packed with the concentrated sweetness of a Welsh summer. There is something deeply satisfying about standing under the canopy of an orchard, hearing the rustle of the leaves, and knowing that these ancient trees have done their job beautifully once again.

Back in the kitchen, the real magic of preservation has begun, filling the house with the most incredible comforting scents. The counter is piled high with fruit waiting to be chopped and transformed. A good portion of the orchard harvest is destined for a massive, bubbling end-of-summer crumble, topped with a thick, buttery oat layer and served warm against the evening chill. The rest of the damsons and apples are currently simmering away in large pots, turning into rich, vibrant jams that will capture the very essence of summer and keep it trapped in glass jars. As the jars are sealed and lined up on the pantry shelves, I feel completely ready to welcome the autumn. There is a profound sense of peace in knowing the larder is stocked with homemade preserves that will brighten up dark winter mornings. This final harvest is a beautiful reminder of the rhythm of the seasons and the simple joy of growing your own food. For now, the tools are being cleaned, the plots are being tucked in, and we are raising a spoon to a fantastic Welsh growing season....

Cheers buddy. It's been a bit too dry and hot here this year(on Welsh standards). We've had a water hosepipe ban, which left some areas of the garden unsuitable for me to use. But overall, I'm happy with this year's harvests

That's pretty serious when they've got a ban on water usage.....πŸ™„
Not to worry my friend the rains are coming back LolπŸ˜…
Enjoy your weekend!!!😎

The kids definitely thanked me. Those plums/damsons didn't last very long at all. I had hoped for a several jars of jams, but the kids left me enough for just 3. Lol

Every year I tell myself I need to do more, plant more, grow more ... Every year I forgot to go "all-in", and every year I thank my5and remind myself that I can barely eat the all the stuff I grow now. I'd have to set up my own shop, if I grew and harvested everything I plan on planting and growing

Haha you could always use the surplus veggies to barter. πŸ˜„

Wow that’s a great looking crop. The effort over the year has definitely paid off. My brother is a keen allotment owner down in London and I should get him on hive!

Very nice! The only thing I managed to grow this year were weeds, but that's pretty much the way it always goes for me. I am working on some new grass now, and my roses are finally starting to come into bloom now that summer is almost over.
